Not about Facebook

February 20th, 2009

So you know when you get sick around, say, Thanksgiving and you remain sick until the end of January? And then suddenly you’re better and you’ve been sick for so long you barely remember what it is to feel well, so it seems like you have ALL THIS ENERGY, you are BURSTING WITH ENERGY, because your head no longer weighs 10,000 pounds? And when you go to inhale, you can do it without opening your mouth? So you feel GREAT and you are ready to GET STUFF DONE? (All the stuff you didn’t get done while you were sick, because you didn’t have the energy?) You know that feeling?

Well, let’s say one of the things you decide to GET DONE is the rather tedious task of cleaning and sanitizing the humidifier. (A device you thought would be useful during the Time of Great Sickness, but which you were actually too sick and tired to remember to clean and refill, or even turn on every night, so it mostly just sat there in the baby’s room taking up valuable floor space and threatening to wreak havoc on your life if the kids tipped it over and spilled the dirty water everywhere.) But now that everyone seems to be healthy and you have ALL! THIS! ENERGY! you are going to bleach that sucker and get it out of the way.

So you dig out the directions, soak it in vinegar and then bleach, scrub it down, and let it air-dry. Then you wrap up the cord, put it away and breathe a sigh of relief. (Your sigh of relief tastes like vinegar and bleach, which the whole kitchen reeks of, but you don’t care because you are just happy to be able to smell again, now that you’re so healthy and all.)

So you know when you do all that, and you’re feeling great, and then you go to bed feeling good about life?

The next day, your son comes down with a cold.

Our dirty humidifier is still sitting, half full, in our bedroom from when I wasn’t feeling well… in DECEMBER.
