Miscommunication
March 18th, 2009
What I said: “Who wants a snack?”
What Siena heard: “Who wants ice cream and cookies, and maybe a sucker and some Hershey’s kisses?”
…..
What I said: “It’s bath time.”
What they heard: “Sure, you can watch cartoons all morning in your pj’s. I’m cool with that. It doesn’t botherĀ me that there’s crusty food in your hair and blue marker all over your arms.”
…..
What I said: “Don’t put the flute on your penis!” (Why would anyone ever have to say that?)
What Elliot heard: “Hey, you have a penis, remember? Why don’t you use it to pee on the bathmat, since you’re not wearing a diaper right now? That would be funny.”
…..
What I said: “When the cat hisses like that, she wants to be left alone.”
What Elliot heard: “The cat hasn’t mauled you yet — keep going! Get right up in her face and see what happens if you start yelling at her! And then maybe pull her tail!”
…..
What I said: “Time for school!”
What they heard: “Quick, Elliot, knock all the books off the shelf and then see if you can get the cat to scratch you again! And Siena — pretend you’re a dog! With rabies! Start crawling around like mad and barking in a screechy voice! Please!”

I’ll have to have a conversation with Siena to find out where our “snack” food is, as I haven’t seen this stuff in the house. I suppose if I had seen it, there wouldn’t be any snack left for the kids to have.

I don’t think the snack response was based in reality so much as it was a list of things she would like to eat right then, at 9:00 in the morning. And I don’t think watching nineteen cartoons or becoming a dog were very realistic either; however, no one should be surprised that Elliot peed on the bathmat.

All those snacks are at my house and you know it – you were just too polite to damn me on your blog. Don’t worry… we’ll be gone in a few months.

Avery and I are listening to Siena’s interview on podcast named pig — Avery would like to be on the podcast some time, too. I’ll have her people call your people to set up a meeting to negotiate terms.
