Podcasting
April 20th, 2009
We did another podcast the other night (click the gray player at the right to listen), a whole family effort this time, on road trips with kids. Since we spent Spring Break on the road and the weekends before and after at Matt’s parents’ house, it seemed like a good thing to talk about. Elliot even answered some questions instead of just yelling “HI-YO!” and cracking up.
Not mentioned in the podcast: the fact that we are still unpacking from all the trips. Which is just great because my mom is moving this week, so we are also hauling carloads of stuff in from her house and getting ready to rearrange furniture yet again and OMG where are we going to put all this stuff? And why am I sitting here typing about it instead of doing something about it? Good question.
Before I get up and get to work, let me just ask you to help us settle a little. . . err. . difference of opinion we’ve been having around here lately regarding the podcasts. If you have a sec, leave us a comment and let us know if you think they are a) too long or b) too short. And if you don’t listen to ours (absolutely no offense will be taken, we swear) what would you say is the ideal length for a podcast? We need your feedback in order to enhance the Podcast Named Pig Listener Experience, so please tell us what you think!

I think that between ten to fifteen minutes is an ideal time for a podcast- not just yours, but anybody’s. Twenty minutes is about the max. I really enjoy the podcasts but find that I need to multitask while listening to them. If I try to just sit and listen to them they can seem long, but if I am looking at people’s pictures on Facebook or flickr while listening to it, then I don’t get bored at all and enjoy listening to people talk at length.

I agree with Nikki – although I just listen to yours in the background while I work on other things so the length is irrelevant to me. I think the bigger issue is that people will either like the idea of a podcast or they won’t. My family – does. My inlaws – don’t. Maybe they’re not allowed to skim…

I listen to podcasts that are anywhere from 5 minutes (NYT Morning Headlines) to over an hour long (The B.S. Report). Length does not matter to me, as well, as I’ll listen as I’m doing other things – in the yard, at work, in the car.
I listen for the content. If it’s interesting to me, and it’s a longer one, I’ll come back to it later, if I can’t do it in one sitting. My problem, at this moment, is that I have 3 days of content I need to get through…and I’ve deleted some to shorten it.

Finally able to listen to podcast – fine work again. Is that with your new microphone?

I am totally changing my answer. I had never really thought to do it before but now I download podcasts (a lot from NPR) and put them on my ipod and listen to them on my hour long commute to work. They are great. So now I think the longer the better!
