When are you having the sale? Are you selling beer?
Yes, I think you are crazy, but in a good way. If you have some bigger items or baby stuff, that usually brings people in.

Umm. . . we weren’t planning to sell the beer. Maybe we’ll do a free beer with purchase over a certain amount.
Or if you take the entertainment center, you get a case of beer. Every week. For the rest of your life.
Please take the entertainment center.
Anybody?

Our lab has one every fall – what a great excuse for a keg party in the front yard. What worked for us:
1) Start early – like in the yard by 8am or so. The diehards who actually buy garage sale stuff usually are doing so first thing.
2) Ridiculously cheap prices. I sold a perfectly functioning laserprinter for $14…way underpriced but I was no longer tripping over it.
3) Have a big box full of stuff you’ll likely not sell but want to get rid of, and then let each person blindly grab and keep an item for each purchase they make. This turned out to be the most fun of all, esp. the look on their face when you don’t accept the stuff back.
4)Put whatever clothes you are selling in the very front of the yard – as Lisa mentions, it will get people to stop.
5) Drinking beer, good idea. Giving away booze/selling it – bad idea. I’m sure uncle Mike will provide ample legal references of liability…and most of the people are driving to get to your garage sale anyway (I’m sure you were kidding about the beer anyway – the only reason I mention it is because we were going to do it during our garage sales)

David — thanks for all the great advice! And no, we were not serious about selling/giving away beer to garage sale customers. Catnamedpig is nothing if not well-advised from a legal standpoint.
But we were serious about the entertainment center — please take it.
Maybe we’ll put that in the “grab box” and see who ends up with it, and what their facial expression looks like.

Tips from a seasoned garage saler and seller:
1) music is key. Keeps everyone cheery. Think, the music they play in Old Navy – keeps you wanting to shop.
2) Hanging clothes on some sort of clothes line moves them faster and keeps then neater than folded on a table. And yes – clothes in front – great tip! We’ll try that at our sale in a few weeks.
3) Price in quarter increments. The cheapest items will be 25 cents. Much easier giving change and tallying purchases. I’m horrible at adding in my head. Anything that seems like it should be less than 25 cents goes in the grab box.
Good luck! Sorry, I already have one too many entertainment centers.

When is it? We’ll come take some baby toys off your hands

Thanks, Brenda, for the tips. The quarter thing will help, since mental math is not exactly my gift.
And Flor, I don’t know yet when the Big Day will be. Waiting for the right combination of child care, weather and other auspicious signs (good beer on sale at nearest liquor store?). But definitely in May. I’ll let you know.

Make sure you have a lawn chair for me and a Hormel “koozie” (this is how the Internet told me to spell it) for my beer!
